There's no single right number, but there is a right way to work it out: start from where you want to advertise and which searches you want to appear for, estimate the cost per click, and make sure the budget is big enough for the campaign to learn.

When someone asks us how much to spend, we first ask where they want their ads to show and which searches they want to appear for. We use Keyword Planner to estimate the cost per click, then propose a budget that isn't too small, so the campaign can run without being held back.
For local businesses like clinics and salons we recommend at least RM2,000 a month. For industrial B2B, which is far more competitive, we recommend about US$1,000 a month (around RM4,000).

A Google Ads budget isn't a fee you pick from a menu. It's the cost of buying enough clicks from the right people to get the enquiries you want. So before talking about ringgit, we answer two questions:
Google's free Keyword Planner (inside Google Ads, under Tools) shows each keyword's monthly searches and a "top of page bid" range for your chosen location. That range is a realistic starting estimate for your cost per click.
Look at the keywords that show real buying intent, like "price", "near me", "supplier", "company" and "quotation", rather than broad research terms. Those are the clicks your budget should buy first.
Once you have a cost per click, the maths is simple:
Clicks needed = leads you want ÷ conversion rate
Monthly budget = clicks needed × cost per click
For example, if you want 20 enquiries a month, expect about 5% of clicks to enquire, and clicks cost around RM4, you need roughly 400 clicks, or about RM1,600 a month. Our free Google Ads budget calculator does this for you, in RM, S$, US$ or A$.
If you've never run ads, you won't know your conversion rate yet. Use a conservative guess and adjust after the first month of real data.
A very small budget is one of the most common reasons Google Ads "fails" for small businesses. When the daily budget runs out by mid-morning:
That's why we'd rather recommend a budget that lets the campaign run properly on fewer, well-chosen keywords than spread a small budget thinly across everything.
| Local businesses (clinics, salons, repair shops) | Industrial and B2B suppliers | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical minimum we recommend | At least RM2,000 a month | About US$1,000 a month (around RM4,000) |
| Why | Searches are local and specific, so a moderate budget can cover the area | Very competitive keywords and higher click prices |
| What else matters | A strong Google Business Profile, WhatsApp and click-to-call | A proper company profile website that builds trust, and patience with a longer sales cycle |
Spending more is only worthwhile if the money is going to the right searches and the landing page turns clicks into enquiries. Two of our clients got much better results without spending more:
Singapore, T-shirt printing: with the same budget, the client was getting about 5 leads a month. After we built a new landing page around the things that make people enquire, they now get about 30 leads a month on that same budget.
United States, private schools: after fixing conversion tracking and optimising towards tour bookings, bookings rose by about 50% in 2 months with the same budget.
So before increasing your budget, check your conversion rate and your search terms. Fixing those first makes every extra ringgit work harder.
It depends on your industry and your account's history. A brand-new account with no data takes longer, because Google doesn't yet understand your website, targeting or keywords. An account that has already run ads can usually improve faster, because the existing data shows what to keep and what to cut.

For a private school, the goal of Google Ads isn't clicks or website visits.
Ads can start showing soon after they're approved, but steady, affordable leads take longer.
When a business tells us Google Ads "doesn't work", the cause is usually one of four setup problems, not Google Ads itself.
