When we audit small business websites, oversized images are one of the most common problems: a 4 MB photo straight from a phone, displayed at 800 pixels wide. Resizing it to the size it's shown at and saving it as WebP often cuts it to a small fraction of the original.

Converting re-draws the image, so hidden metadata such as camera details and GPS location is not carried over. That's usually what you want before publishing photos online.
