What is Conversion Rate in Google Ads?

Conversion rate is the percentage of people who click your ad and then do what you want, like submitting a form, calling or sending a WhatsApp message. It's usually the biggest lever on your cost per lead.

From our experience

The landing page change that most often lifts conversion rate for our clients in Malaysia is simple: make it easy to reach you on a phone, right away. That means a WhatsApp button that's always visible, a short form instead of a long one, and the price range or "from" price where people can see it.

For most local service businesses we work with, WhatsApp brings in more enquiries than forms. For B2B and industrial clients, forms tend to bring better-qualified leads. We track both separately so we can see the difference.

How it's calculated

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ interactions × 100

For search ads, "interactions" are clicks. If your ad gets 400 clicks and 20 people submit your enquiry form, your conversion rate is 20 ÷ 400 = 5%.

A "conversion" is whatever you tell Google to count: a form submission, a phone call, a WhatsApp click, a purchase or a booking. If conversion tracking isn't set up, Google Ads can't show a conversion rate at all, which is one of the most common problems we see in accounts we audit.

Why it matters so much

Doubling your conversion rate halves your cost per lead, without spending a cent more on ads. Compare:

ClicksAvg CPCSpendConversion rateLeadsCost per lead
400A$4A$1,6002%8A$200
400A$4A$1,6006%24A$67

Same budget, same clicks, three times the leads. That's why improving the landing page usually beats fighting for cheaper clicks.

What affects conversion rate

What's a good conversion rate?

It varies widely by industry and by what you count as a conversion. Many lead-generation businesses see somewhere between 2% and 10% from search ads, but your own trend matters more than any average. Measure it, change one thing at a time, and compare month on month.

Why is my conversion rate over 100%?

If one click can lead to several conversions (for example, a form submission and a phone call), Google may count both. Set the conversion count to "One" for lead actions in your conversion settings to avoid inflated numbers.
