Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that uses Google's automation to show your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from a single campaign, aiming for your conversion goal.
Performance Max has worked best for our local service clients, like repair shops and salons, that have WhatsApp tracking and good photos. It's struggled for lead-generation clients whose tracking counted every map-directions click as a lead, because it found cheap "conversions" that never became customers.
When PMax isn't working, it's rarely the campaign type itself. It's usually what it's being told to optimise for. Fixing the conversion setup, and feeding back which leads actually closed, usually matters more than any setting inside the campaign.

Instead of choosing keywords and placements yourself, you give Google:
Google's automation then decides where, when and to whom to show your ads across all its channels, and mixes your assets into different ad formats.
Neither is always better. Search campaigns give more control over exactly which searches you pay for; PMax reaches further with less control. Many accounts use both, with Search covering high-intent keywords.
It can, but only with strong signals: offline conversion imports from your CRM, customer lists, and careful exclusions. Without them, B2B PMax campaigns often generate low-quality leads.
